CHAPTER TEN

Kelly's mother had organized the seating plan for the rehearsal dinner roughly in order of each person's importance in tomorrow's proceedings. Josh and Nikki, who turned out to be a gorgeous, all-American blonde, had the center seats at the long table in downtown Richmond's Chez Nico restaurant. Their parents would sit either side of them. Then came Trent and the maid of honor, Nikki's friend Amanda. Then assorted bridesmaids and groomsmen, and at the far end of the table, Kelly. Seated next to Pastor Giles.Trent grabbed Kelly's arm as she headed toward her seat. "You shouldn't be sitting down there'"

She tugged away, looking anxiously at her parents to check they hadn't overheard. "Pastor Giles is blessed with the gift of abundant small talk. I'm looking forward to it."

"Tell your mom you want to sit with me."

"Whatever point he was making, she wished he wouldn't. "I don't want to sit with you,"she lied.

Something flashed in his eyes, something almost like hurt. Kelly hurried to her seat, where she invited the pastor to update her on the happenings in the church community.

But she listened to him with only half an ear. She would have given anything to be closer to Trent and Amanda. Amanda of the long blond hair, almond-shaped blue eyes and a smile that Kelly found too wide to be attractive. Trent seemed enthralled by those pearly white teeth and the frequent laughter of their owner.

Amanda leaned into him as she spoke, and Kelly was fairly sure he had a great view of the maid of honor's cleavage in her strappy top. Amanda's hand fluttered alluringly over Trent's, occasionally alighting on his just long enough to make him want more.

But while Amanda might be blatant, she wasn't stupid. She was a lawyer, and from the few snatches Kelly caught of their conversation, she was keeping Trent amused with anecdotes of cases she'd tried.

"When Kelly bent down to pick up a fork she'd dropped, she used the opportunity to check under the table. She found the woman's leg pressed the length of Trent's .Kelly ignored the fact that he didn't have much room to move at the crowded table. If he wanted to, he'd find somewhere else to put his leg.

Thinking back to that look in his eyes when they'd sat down, Kelly half wondered if he was responding to Amanda just to annoy her. But why would he do that? More likely, given he hadn't made love to a woman all season, he was succumbing to Amanda's overt appeal.

The thought of him giving in to temptation caused a stab bing pain behind Kelly's ribs.

She told herself she was worried how such a dramatic change in his routine might affect his driving. He'd be distracted, he'd probably want a repeat performance every night this week, and who knew what that would do to his racing on Sunday?

She glared down the table at Amanda. Trent intercepted the look and raised his eyebrows. Kelly composed her face into a mask of serenity. But not fast enough, going by the quirk of his lips.
